Granny Squares

The pattern starts with making the granny squares (make 7)

Ch 7, slip stitch to first chain to form a ring.

Round 1: Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1), dc, ch 1 around until you have 12 dc and 12 ch, join to top of first ch 3

Round 2:  Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2dc in chain, *dc on top of dc, 2dc in chain space* repeat from * to * around (36 dc), join to top of first ch 3

Round 3:  Ch 4 (counts as tr) cluster tr over the next 2 stitches (instead of 3 because the first ch 4 counts as your first treble crochet), ch 4, *3 tr cluster over next 3 stitches, ch 4* repeat from * to * around, join to top of first ch 4 (12 clusters)

Round 4: *Ch 5, slip stitch into base of chain 5 to form a loop (this will be a corner), [ch 5, slip stitch on top of cluster] 3 times* repeat from * to * around, join to base of first ch 5 loop (4 corner loops, 12 ch 5)

Round 5:  Slip stitch to the top of the loop, *ch 5, slip stitch into base to form a loop, (you will have a loop on top of the loop from previous round), [ch 5, slip stitch into the chain 5 from previous round] 4 times,* repeat from * to * around, join to base of first ch 5 loop (4 corner loops, 16 ch 5)

Round 6:  *ch 3 (counts as dc), (dc, ch 3, 2dc) all into corner loop from previous round, (2dc, ch 1, 2dc) in each ch 5 space* repeat from * to * around (note: in the remaining corners work 2dc ch 3 2dc with no ch 3) join to top of first ch 3 (80 dc)

This is for size L/XL – for S/M, fasten off

Square is approximately 7 inches

Optional  Round 7:  ch 2, (counts as hdc), *hdc in each stitch across, (2 hdc, ch 1, 2 hdc) in the corner ch space* repeat from * to * around, join to top of first ch 2 (96 hdc)

Fasten off, weave in the ends.

Make 7 squares. I wet blocked my squares overnight before assembling them together.

Construction

Once you have 7 squares made, line them up like this:Crochet them together by slip stitching the back loops together. Put first two squares together, right side facing out, insert hook through first back loops of both and slip stitch, continue following the arrows until it’s all one piece.

Turn your work so there are four squares across the top. You’re going to make the straps. Attach yarn to the tip of the first square, ch 30 (adjust the amount of chains to your liking, if needed), attach to the top of next square (make sure not to twist the chain). Fasten off. Weave in the ends. Do the same for the next strap.

Turn work right side up. You’re going to sc around the outside of the tank. Starting at the corner of the far right square, single crochet in each stitch and chain across, all the way to the opposite corner and then work along the bottom, then join to your first sc.

Now you’ll be working along the bottom.  Insert your hook in the farthest right corner, ch  4 (counts as dc + ch 1) skip one stitch, dc, *ch 1, skip one stitch, dc* repeat from * to * all the way to the end. (if there’s an extra stitch, don’t worry. Just fudge it and skip two stitches in the end or add another dc)

Ch 1, turn, *sc in chain space,  (2dc, ch 2, 2dc) in next chain space* repeat from * to * across. Fasten off weave in the ends.Add a button to one of the corners for the back. I used the corner space of the opposite square as the button hole. And the top is ready!
