Muffin – free crochet instruction

Muffin with Cotton Queen 

Difficulty level: 3, Intermediate

Yarn: Performance Cotton Queen, Cat1: Super Fine, Fingering type yarn, 50 g (1.76 oz)/125 m(137 yds) per ball,  100 % Cotton

col.A –0190- mustard  -5g,

col.B  – 0114 yellow – 2g,

col.C – 0101 white – 3g,

col.D – 0156 fuscia – 4g,

col.E – 0183 puple – 1g

col.F – 0147 dark green – 1m

Materials: Crochet hook 2 (1.75 mm), yarn needle, stitch marker, stuffing.

Gauge: 10cm x 10cm = 26 stiches x 36 rows

Notes:

  • Pattern is written in US crochet terms.
  • Muffin and blackberries are worked in spiral – in continuous rounds without joining or turning between rounds. To help keep track of your stitches, use a stitch marker at the beginning of each round. Topping and leaf are worked in rows
  • Measurements: height 5 cm, 3cm diameter

Stitches:

Ch(s) – chain(s), sl st – slip stitch, sc- single crochet, dc- double crochet, st(s) – stitch(es).

Special stitches:

sc2tog – sc decrease – insert the hook where indicated, pull up a loop (2 loops on hook), insert the hook in next st, pool up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through all 3 loops.

blsc – sc in the back loop from the stitch from previous row

fpdc – front post dc – yarn over, insert hook from front to back and to front again around the vertical post (upright part) of next st, yarn over and draw yarn through, yarn over and complete dc.

Instructions

Round 1: With col.A(mustard), make a double loop (magic circle), 6sc inside the circle. – 6sc

Round 2: 2sc in each sc around. – 12sc

Round 3: *Sc, 2sc in next sc; repeat from* around. – 18sc

Round 4: *Sc in next 2sc, 2sc in next sc; repeat from* around. – 24sc

Round 5: *Sc in next 3sc, 2sc in next sc; repeat from* around. – 30sc

Round 6:  Blsc in each sc around (p.1). – 30blsc

Round 7: *Sc in next 9sc, 2sc in next sc; repeat from* around. – 33sc

Round 8: Sc in each sc around. – 33sc

Round 9: *Sc in next 10sc, 2sc in next sc; repeat from* around. – 36sc

Round 10:  Blsc in each sc around (p.2). – 36blsc

Round 11: *Sc in next 4sc, sc2tog; repeat from* around. – 30sc

Round 12: *Blsc in next 3sc, blsc2tog; repeat from* around. – 24blsc

Fasten off. Weave in.

Continue to work on Round 9.

Round 9a: Join yarn at first st (p.3), work on front loops, ch2(count as dc here and throughout) (p.4), dc in each st around (p.5), join with sl st at beginning ch3. – 36dc

Round 10a: Ch2(p.5), fpdc (p.6,7) in each dc around, ch1. – 36fpdc

Continue to work through both thicknesses, joining Round 10a with back ridge on top of Round 9a, *ch3, sl st in next st; repeat from* around (p.9)

Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Border

Continue to work on front loops of Round 11.

Round 11a: With col.B(yellow), join yarn at first st (p.10), ch3((p.11), *2dc in next st, 3dc in next st,; repeat from* around, join with sl st at beginning ch3(p.12). – 36dc

Fasten off, weave in ends and put the stuffing.

Topping

Row 1: With col.C (white)Ch21.

Row 2: Blsc at first ch from hook, blsc in each st across, turn. – 20blsc

Row 3: Ch1(doesn’t count as st here and throughout), 2blsc,  blsc in each across to last two stitches, blsc2tog(p.14), turn – 20 blsc

Row 4: Join col. D(fuscisa)(p.15,16), ch1 (p.17), blsc2tog(p.18), blsc in each st to last one, 2blsc in last st(p.19), turn. – 20 blsc

Row 5-24: Repeat Row2-3, changing alternating colour C and D after each 2 rows, finishing with col.D(fuscia) (p.20).

Fold your work joining first row and last row then sew on or sl st working back loops only to have nonvisible join seam and make a cylinder (p.21). Then run the needle around the top opening and draw closed, pull the yarn very closed, knot, and weave into surrounding stitches (p.22). Put the stuffing inside and close the other side of the cylinder (p.23,24).

Blackberry (make 3)

Round 1: With col.E (purple), make a double loop (magic circle), 4sc inside the circle. – 4sc

Round 2: *Sc, 2sc in next sc; repeat from* around. – 6sc

Round 3: *Sc in next sc, sc2tog in next sc; repeat from* around. – 4sc

Leave a long tail. Run the needle around the 4sts from last row and draw closed, then pull the yarn very closed, knot, and weave into surrounding stitches.

Leaf

Row 1: With col.F (dark green)Ch7, turn.

Row 2: Sc in second ch from hook, hdc, dc in next 2 chs, hdc, sc, ch1, continue to work on opposite side of foundation chain, sc, hdc, dc in next 2 chs, hdc, sc.

Sew on the 3 blackberries at centre up of the topping (side edges join), sew on the leaf between blackberries and the topping. Sew on the topping on top of the muffin. Fasten off and weave in.
